Here we share ten of the most famous pirates in history:<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sir Francis Drake (English, 1540 \u2013 1595): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One of the most celebrated privateers of his time, he relentlessly sacked his life-long foe, the Spanish army, most often on the order of Queen Elizabeth I herself.\u00a0 One of his greatest achievements was sailing to North America where he claimed new land on the Pacific coast for Queen Elizabeth.\u00a0 This journey led him to become the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Francois l\u2019Olonnais (French, 1635 \u2013 1668):\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>l\u2019Olonnais worked on an American plantation as an indentured servant until he turned to piracy.\u00a0 Known for his vicious behavior, l\u2019Olonnais was one of the most successful pirates on land.\u00a0 He raided and captured many towns as well as ships.\u00a0 He is said to have eaten a Spanish soldier\u2019s heart during one of his attacks.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>William Kidd (Scottish, 1645 \u2013 1701): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Known as \u201cCaptain Kidd\u201d, Kidd was originally commissioned as a privateer to rid the seas of pirates.\u00a0 He reluctantly turned to piracy after being elected pirate captain by his crew.\u00a0 After attacking an East India Company vessel, he was captured in Boston and sent to trial in England where he was executed.\u00a0 His buried treasure, hidden somewhere on Gardiners Island, has created a legend around this notorious pirate.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Anne Bonny (Irish, 1700 \u2013 1782): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>One of the few known <a href=\"https:\/\/belltechwebtools.com\/STAGING\/johnspass\/pirate-ship-blog\/5-fierce-female-pirates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">female pirates<\/a>, Bonny joined \u201cCalico Jack\u201d Rackham\u2019s pirate crew while acting and dressing like a man.\u00a0 Although she never commanded a pirate ship herself, she is known for being a formidable pirate enticing great bloodshed and violence.\u00a0 \u00a0She was captured and sentenced to death, along with fellow female pirate Mary Read.\u00a0 Both claimed pregnancy while in prison, and their sentences were never carried out.\u00a0 After prison, Bonny\u2019s whereabouts were unknown.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Henry Every \u201cLong Ben\u201d (English, 1653 \u2013 Unknown): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Every began his career in the British Royal Navy and became a pirate captain by mutiny.\u00a0 He was the richest pirate in the world after capturing two of the finest treasure ships in the Indian Ocean, filled with gold and jewels.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Sir Henry Morgan (Welsh, 1653 \u2013 1688): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Morgan was the head of the Jamaican fleet and terrorized Spain\u2019s Caribbean colonies in the late 1600s.\u00a0 Rumor has it, he pillaged more than 400 ships throughout his career with his greatest achievement being the capture of the very wealthy Panama City (included 30 ships and 1,200 men).\u00a0 After the raid of Panama City, he was arrested and brought back to England.\u00a0 Because battle resumed between England and Spain, King Charles II not only released Morgan but also knighted him for his efforts against Spain.\u00a0 He returned to Jamaica where he served as deputy governor.\u00a0 Upon retirement, he lived as a well- respected farmer until his death.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Cheung Po Tsai (Chinese, early 1800s &#8211; mid 1800s):<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A fisherman\u2019s son, Tsai was captured by a pirate by whom he was later adopted.\u00a0 He eventually became a pirate himself where he commanded an army of over 50,000 men and several hundred ships. He amassed great treasure along the Guangdong coastline which he hid in a small cave that is still named after him to this day.\u00a0 He was caught by the Chinese government with whom he struck a deal and became a captain in the Qing Imperial Navy.\u00a0 He was later appointed colonel and spent the remainder of his life aiding the Chinese government in capturing pirates.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Edward Teach \u201cBlackbeard\u201d (English, 1680 \u2013 1718): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Known for his fearsome appearance, Teach was one of the best-known and widely-feared pirates of his time.\u00a0 At the height of his career, he had an army of 300 pirates and captured over forty merchant ships in the Caribbean.\u00a0 His battle technique used two swords with several knives and pistols at the ready, and without flinching, killed many prisoners.\u00a0 After his death, his legend was romanticized and became an inspiration for many pirate-themed works of fiction.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Bartholomew Roberts \u201cBlack Bart\u201d (Welsh, 1682 \u2013 1722): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Roberts was wildly admired by his crew for his adventurist courage, navigation skills, and bravado.\u00a0 He captured over 400 ships during his reign, and died in a vigorous battle against a British vessel, stunning both his followers and the British Royal Navy.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ching Shih (Chinese, 1785-1844): <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Shih is known as the <em>most<\/em> successful female pirate in history! A fascinating historical figure, she was beautiful and a former prostitute.\u00a0 After gaining equality to her husband, the pirate Cheng, she took over his operation upon his demise. She controlled more than 1,500 ships with 80,000 men, and plundered ships along the coast of the South China Sea.\u00a0 The Chinese government offered her pirate amnesty in exchange for peace, which she later accepted.\u00a0 She spent the remainder of her life running a casino and brothel with her second husband, who was also her adopted son.<\/p>\n<h3>Tour on a Tampa Pirate Ship<\/h3>\n<p>Want to hear all about the history of pirates?
